The theme of the project is based on the incident in Okinawa, Japan, after World War II, when people in Okinawa used machine oil to fry tempura. Such an absurd-sounding event is true in history. After the Battle of Okinawa during World War II, the U.S. military left a large amount of machine oil in the 41 military bases on the island, and the artillery fire depleted the food. All the war brought to this ruin was tons of machine oil. In such a barren situation, gradually some hungry residents tried to make fried tempura with machine oil. The strange aroma attracted more and more naive and ignorant residents to try it. One report shows at the time, "nine out of ten people were eating fried tempura in machine oil."

After all, machine oil is a product that cannot be broken down in the human body and is a hazardous fat. Wikipedia documented this incident, and the shadow cast by this machine oil still seems to hang over Okinawa today. The rate of alcoholism and obesity among Okinawan people is one of the highest in Japan, and contemporary Okinawan people also have an identity crisis.

I wanted to use this project to show the importance of peace. I used a lot of symbolic elements, such as warplanes, wreckage, and skulls representing war deaths, and colorful black representing the machine left behind, the background of the historical newspaper is the presentation of time, and the microphone of the TV station represents the modern people to focus their attention on this event, to reflect on the historical significance behind this event, rather than just treating it as a strange story, and so on. The ownership of the island of Okinawa has been debated throughout history, and recently there has been information that Okinawa will be returned to the Ryukyu Islands. Also, international wars and conflicts between countries have not completely stopped nowadays. Regarding the memories and effects of wars, innocent citizens are the biggest victims at any given time. The name "isolated island" is a hope for a future in which "no one is an isolated island."
